NASA Successfully Tests Ares I Rocket Despite Uncertain Future.

The AP (9/11, Stark) reports, “The first test of NASA’s powerful moon rocket went off without a problem Thursday as more than a million pounds of propellant ignited in a split second.” According to the article, “more than 4,000witnessed the test run by Alliant Techsystems (ATK) with “scores” more watching it on TV. This test of the Ares I rocket engine “comes amid new questions about funding for the space program.” However, “NASA and Alliant officials said they were pleased with Thursday’s test and happy to resolve the problem that plagued last month’s attempted test.” Researchers will now analyze the data from over 650 sensors over the next few weeks.

According to the New York Times (9/11, A16, Chang), the test, which went “smoothlymay be the beginning of the end for Ares I. A blue-ribbon panel reviewing the human spaceflight program included the Ares I in only one of the options it is presenting to the Obama administration.”

Florida Today (9/11, Halvorson) notes “NASA’s besieged Ares I program scored a victory Thursday.” This firing “was the first of seven planned to qualify the first-stage for flight.” According to the article, “Former NASA astronaut Charlie Precourt was impressed” with the firing. Precourt is vice president and general manager of space launch systems for ATK.

The Orlando Sentinel (9/11, Matthews) “Write Stuff” blog reports the test “comes at a critical time for NASA and the Ares I rocket.” Alex Priskos, NASA’s first stage manager for Ares, said, “With this test, we have taken lessons learned from many years of experience in solid rocket motor development and have built on that foundation.”

Space.com (9/11, Moskowitz) calls the test “key” for the program. Officials “said the test went according to plan, with no signs of anything unexpected.” Priskos described the preliminary data from the firing as “absolutely consistent with our expectations and what we thought we were going to get.”

BBC News (9/11), Reuters (9/11, Klotz), Space News (9/10, Berger), and the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal (9/11, Black) also cover the story.
